IMPORTANT INFORMATION

1. Hiking

Hiking is a recreational activity involving walking along well-marked trails or paths, usually for a few hours or a full day. It typically takes place in parks, forests, hills, or nature reserves and does not require special equipment. Hiking is suitable for individuals of all fitness levels and is considered the easiest among outdoor walking activities.

2. Trekking

Trekking is a more challenging and extended form of hiking. It involves multi-day journeys through rugged terrain, including steep cliffs, jungle paths, rocky trails, and loose volcanic sand (often described as “one step forward, half a step back”). Trekking usually occurs in remote and mountainous regions, requires carrying gear, overnight camping, and readiness for unpredictable weather. It demands higher physical and mental endurance and is considered an adventurous experience.
Trekking Mount Rinjani falls under this second category of outdoor activities in Lombok.

PREPARATION FOR TREKKING MOUNT RINJANI

If you plan to trek Mount Rinjani, proper preparation is essential. Below are key preparations:

  • Mental and Physical Readiness
Ensure you are mentally prepared and physically fit for the challenge.

  • Exercise Before the Trip
Engage in physical activities such as running or jogging at least two weeks before the trek to build stamina and strength.

  • Bring Proper Equipment
Pack all the necessary gear and clothing as listed in the itinerary or packing guide provided by your tour operator.

  • Carry Personal Medications and First Aid
Essential items include medication for headaches, stomach issues, muscle cramps, muscle spray, and a basic first aid kit.

HEALTH CONDITIONS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR TREKKING

Climbing a mountain, especially one with high altitude like Mount Rinjani, requires strong physical and mental health. The following medical conditions are generally not allowed for mountain trekking due to safety concerns:

1. Heart Diseases

  • Coronary artery disease

  • Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)

  • Congestive heart failure

  • History of heart attack
Reason: Climbing increases heart workload, and low oxygen levels can trigger heart complications.

2. Lung Diseases

  • Severe asthma

  • COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)

  • Emphysema

  • Active tuberculosis
Reason: Reduced oxygen at high altitudes can worsen breathing issues and cause serious complications.

3. Uncontrolled High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

Especially if accompanied by dizziness or headaches.
Risk: Increased chance of stroke due to altitude pressure and physical exertion.

4. Uncontrolled Diabetes

Risk: Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or hyperglycemia during strenuous activity, which is difficult to manage in remote areas.

5. Epilepsy or History of Seizures

Risk: Seizures in challenging terrain can be life-threatening.

6. Severe Anemia

Low hemoglobin (<10 g/dL) reduces oxygen-carrying capacity, leading to fatigue or fainting.

7. Serious Mental Health Disorders

  • Schizophrenia

  • Unstable bipolar disorder

  • Psychosis

  • Severe depression with suicidal tendencies
Reason: Mental clarity, emotional stability, and group coordination are crucial during mountain climbs.

8. Vertigo or Balance Disorders

Risk: Dizziness and disorientation increase the risk of falling on steep or narrow trails.

9. Chronic Kidney Disease / Dialysis Patients

Risk: Dehydration and complications due to limited medical access.

10. History of Stroke or Severe Neurological Conditions

Risk: Physical stress and high altitude can cause recurrence or worsening of symptoms.
